The Adventure of John Smith in Malaya - 1600-1605

I'm quite intrigue by the title.
Mistaken the 'John Smith' a person that become main character in 'Shogun', a novel by James Clavell. Further reading shows that he was an adventurer who help Queen of Pattani (Che Siti Wan Kembang?) kidnap the Royal Family of Perak in 1600s by help of Negritoes arrow men!
On his arrival from Netherland, he was assigned the office of Dato Dagang, akin to Secretary of Trade. Its not a strange situation for Malay state appointing a foreigner because it was deemed as catalyst of trade during that time between west and east.
