A group of scientist from Colorado University is almost perfecting plants mutation techniques. Protein within the plants will be reacting when "sensing" compound made of explosives devices ( TNT) and will be draining all chlorophyll from it's leaves and turn into white.
The research starting from 2003, and after spending closed to USD 2 billion of US Defense Dept, are near complete, where the plants right now only react within one hour when place near TNT. They hope to complete the research by making plants to turn white within minutes.
“Right now, response time is in the order of hours,’’ said Linda Chrisey, a program manager at the Office of Naval Research, which hopes to use the technology to help protect troops from improvised explosive devices
So in near future, you will be seeing lot of plants place near check-in point in US airport, and no more X ray job!
